What is Flexion Distraction?

Flexion distraction therapy aims to reduce spinal disc compression by gently stretching your spine. A special table (sometimes called a Cox or Leander table) provides the movement necessary to stretch your spine. Dr Charlton is trained in Flexion Distraction technique and has used it daily for almost 20 years to great effect.

You lie face down on this table and your chiropractor gently moves the lower half of your body up and down in a slow, rhythmic motion. As your feet lower towards the floor, your chiropractor may also provide gentle pressure to your spine to enhance the effect. This movement gently stretches your spine, pulling the vertebrae further apart and putting a decompressive stretching force through discs and soft tissues.

The treatment is not usually painful at all (most patients LOVE it!) and it is suitable for those with back pain and leg pain of many different causes. It often helps pain, flexibility and mobility and is very safe. It is a favourite for those with osteoarthritis, sciatica and overall stiffness. It is gentle enough to be safe for those who have had spinal surgery or who have osteopaenia or osteoporosis (we modify our approach appropriately).

What are the benefits of flexion distraction?

Flexion distraction aims to improve mobility and restore spinal function. It is a very safe, non-invasive, and non-drug form of treatment for spinal injury and leg pain and offers many benefits.

  • It can restore mobility in the spine over time.
  • It can help reduce pain and inflammation in the spine and legs.
  • Flexion distraction therapy gently stretches joints, relieving pressure on spinal nerves and effectively treating referred pain caused by nerve compression.
  • It can help treat conditions such as low back pain, sciatica/leg pain, disc bulges/protrusions and herniations and others.
  • It can be an important pain reliever in chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis.
  • Consistent therapy can often help improve spine health, creating more mobility with less pain and a better ability to perform your daily activities.
